THAT Ministers remain silent about the launch of a new £100m consultants report into how best to improve rail services between Leeds and Sheffield – two of the country’s great cities – is damning in itself about the state of the railways here.

This, for the record, was the ‘fig leaf’ offered to the region last November by the London Government when its £96bn Integrated Rail Plan effectively scrapped the eastern leg of HS2 and downgraded Northern Powerhouse Rail.
